Rafting Day Trip from Berat: Both Routes to the Vjosa
Short answer: yes, but check which road you are taking. There are two ways from Berat to Përmet — a short mountain road and a longer paved one — and the difference matters more than the distance suggests. Plan on three hours either way and take the 14:00 departure.
The two routes from Berat to Përmet
The mountain road, via Çorovodë and Këlcyrë
- Distance: about 92 km
- Temps de conduite : 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on conditions
- Road condition: this is the catch. Sections between Poliçan, Çorovodë and Këlcyrë are narrow mountain road, and some stretches are in poor repair or unsurfaced. It is passable in a normal car in dry weather, slow in rain, and not something to attempt after dark.
The scenery is exceptional — you pass close to the Osum canyon country — but only take this road in daylight, in dry weather, and only if you are comfortable driving mountain roads.
The paved road, via Tepelenë
- Distance: about 185 km
- Temps de conduite : around 3 hours
- Route: Berat west to the SH4, south through Fier and Tepelenë, then east along the Vjosa to Përmet
- Road condition: main road the whole way, good surface
Twice the distance for roughly the same time, and far less stressful. In wet weather or with a hire car you would rather return undamaged, take this one.
Which departure to book
The 14:00 departure is the realistic choice from Berat. Leave around 10:30, arrive with time to check in, and you are on the water at two. The 10:00 departure means leaving Berat at 06:30, which is a hard start on a mountain road.
If you would rather not drive three hours each way in one day, Përmet has good, inexpensive guesthouses. Staying the night turns a long drive into a proper trip.
How long is the day?
À Propos nine hours door to door: three hours driving each way, 30 minutes for check-in and the safety briefing, roughly two hours on the water over the full 7.6 km of Class II–III rapids, and half an hour to shower and change.
What it costs
€35 per adult and €30 per child, no deposit, with group rates of €32 each for 10 to 19 people and €28 each for 20 or more. See the prices page for exactly what is and is not included.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to drive from Berat to Përmet?
About three hours on either route — roughly 92 km on the mountain road through Çorovodë, or about 185 km on the paved road via Tepelenë. The paved route is longer but easier and safer.
Can I do Berat to Vjosa rafting and back in one day?
Yes, with the 14:00 departure, though it makes for a nine-hour day. Many visitors from Berat prefer to stay one night in Përmet.
Do I need a 4×4 for the Çorovodë road?
Not in dry conditions — a normal car manages it if you drive slowly. In rain, or if you are at all unsure, use the paved route via Tepelenë instead.
Can I combine this with the Osum canyon?
The Osum canyon sits on the mountain route between Berat and Përmet, so it is a natural stop if you are driving that way. We run trips on the Vjosa only.
