Most international visitors fly into Tirana International Airport (TIA) and drive south. The most reliable route is via the SH4 national road, which runs through the Muzinë pass and connects the southern lowlands to the Vjosa valley. Here’s the step-by-step:

• Take the SH4 south from Tirana toward Fier and then Tepelenë
• Pass through Tepelenë and continue along the Vjosa River gorge — one of Albania’s most dramatic road sections
• After Tepelenë, follow the river road southeast into the Përmet basin
• Total distance: approximately 215 km
• Estimated drive time: 3.5 hours under normal conditions

The Tepelenë–Përmet stretch follows the Vjosa canyon closely, and while the scenery is breathtaking, the road is narrow with sharp bends. Drive carefully, especially after rain. This road is paved but requires full attention.

From Gjirokastër (1.5 Hours)

If you’re already in Gjirokastër — the UNESCO-listed “city of stone” — Përmet is a short and straightforward drive away.

• Take the SH75 road northwest toward Këlcyrë and then Përmet
• The road climbs briefly before descending into the Vjosa valley

There are two roads from Berat and they are very different. The mountain road through Poliçan, Çorovodë and Këlcyrë is only about 92 km but parts of it are narrow and in poor repair, so it takes 2.5 to 3 hours and should be driven in daylight and dry weather. From Greece / Ioannina (3 Hours)

Përmet is one of the closest Albanian adventure destinations for travellers coming from Greece. The Kakavija border crossing is the main entry point from Ioannina.

• Drive from Ioannina, Greece to the Kakavija border crossing (approximately 70 km)
• After crossing into Albania, continue north on the SH4 through Gjirokastër
• From Gjirokastër, take the SH75 northwest to Përmet
• Total drive time from Ioannina: approximately 3 hours

Border crossing tip: Kakavija can have queues during summer weekends and Greek public holidays. Plan to cross in the morning to avoid delays. EU citizens and most nationals enter Albania without a visa.

Getting to Përmet by Bus

If you prefer not to drive, bus services connect Tirana to Përmet. This is a budget-friendly option and perfectly viable for solo travellers.

• Tirana to Përmet: Daily buses depart from Tirana’s Southern Bus Terminal (Terminali i Jugut). Journey time is approximately 4–5 hours depending on stops.
• Buses typically depart in the early morning (around 07:00–09:00)
• Tickets cost around 700–900 ALL (€6–8)
• There are also minibus (furgon) services that are faster but less predictable in schedule
• By taxi: a taxi from Gjirokastër to Përmet is easy to arrange and worth it split between three or four people. Ask your guesthouse to book one the night before.
