Rafting Safety & Equipment — Vjosa Rafting Albania

When you join us on the Vjosa River, your safety is our absolute priority. Vjosa rafting safety is built into every aspect of our operation — from the equipment we use to the training our guides undergo and the procedures we follow before every trip. The Vjosa is one of Europe’s last wild rivers, and while that wildness is exactly what makes it so special, we ensure every participant can enjoy the adventure with complete confidence and peace of mind.

Our Vjosa Rafting Safety Standards

We operate in full compliance with international whitewater safety guidelines and align our practices with the standards set by the International Rafting Federation (IRF). Every season, our procedures are reviewed and updated to reflect best practices in river safety, risk management, and guest care. This commitment means you can focus entirely on the experience while we handle everything else.

Our stretch of the Vjosa River features Class II and Class III rapids, which offer genuine excitement without being extreme. Class II rapids involve straightforward channels with some waves and minor obstacles, while Class III rapids present moderate, irregular waves that may require maneuvering. This range makes the Vjosa ideal for first-time rafters and experienced paddlers alike. Learn more about who we are and how we operate on our About page.

Professional Guide Qualifications

Every rafting session on the Vjosa is led by certified, experienced river guides. Our team holds internationally recognised whitewater guide certifications and participates in ongoing training to maintain and improve their skills. Before joining our team permanently, all guides complete a rigorous assessment on the Vjosa itself, ensuring familiarity with local river conditions, seasonal water level changes, and the specific character of each rapid along our route.

Our guides are trained in:

  • Swiftwater rescue techniques — including throw-bag deployment, swimmer assist, and in-water rescue
  • First aid and emergency response — all lead guides hold Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or equivalent certification
  • River reading and hazard assessment — identifying and communicating risks before and during the run
  • Group management — keeping all participants together, informed, and confident throughout the experience
  • Equipment inspection and maintenance — daily checks of all gear before any group takes to the water

You will never be on the river with an uncertified or unsupervised guide. Depending on group size, we maintain a guide-to-guest ratio that ensures personal attention and fast response times if any situation arises. Find out how we manage group tours of all sizes with full safety coverage included.

CE-Certified Safety Equipment

All equipment provided as part of your rafting experience meets or exceeds CE certification standards. We do not cut corners on gear — everything is inspected before each use and replaced on a strict schedule regardless of visible wear. Proper equipment is a fundamental component of vjosa rafting safety, and we invest heavily to keep our fleet in top condition.

CE-certified safety equipment including helmets and life jackets for vjosa river rafting

What Equipment Is Provided

Every participant receives the following as part of their booking:

  • CE-certified whitewater helmet — fitted individually for each guest, providing full impact and side protection
  • Personal flotation device (PFD / life jacket) — CE-approved buoyancy aids sized by weight and chest measurement, not one-size-fits-all
  • Full wetsuit — 3mm neoprene suits available in all sizes, keeping you warm regardless of air or water temperature
  • Neoprene booties — protecting your feet on rocky riverbanks and providing grip inside the raft
  • Paddle — lightweight, durable paddles appropriate for your height and the day’s conditions
  • Splash jacket (where conditions require) — an additional layer over the wetsuit for colder days or higher water levels

What to Wear and Bring

Although all key safety equipment is provided, there are a few things you should bring or wear to ensure the best experience:

  • Swimwear or quick-dry shorts and top — worn underneath the wetsuit
  • Secure footwear — old trainers or sandals with a heel strap; flip-flops are not permitted on the water
  • Sunscreen — waterproof, applied before arrival (we can provide if needed)
  • Change of clothes and a towel — for after the session
  • Water bottle — stay hydrated, especially on warm days
  • Prescription glasses strap — if you wear glasses, a secure strap is essential

Leave valuables, jewellery, and non-waterproof electronics at home or secured in our changing area. Waterproof phone pouches are available to purchase on-site if you want to capture photos during the trip.

Pre-Trip Safety Briefing

Before every single session on the water, all participants attend a mandatory safety briefing led by your lead guide. This is not a formality — it is a critical part of our operation and a core element of responsible vjosa rafting safety practice. The briefing covers:

  • How to hold and use your paddle correctly
  • Paddle commands and how to respond to your guide’s instructions
  • What to do if you fall out of the raft (swimming position, how to re-board)
  • How to help a fellow rafter who has entered the water
  • Identifying and pointing to hazards as instructed
  • Emergency signals and what they mean

All briefings are conducted in English and Albanian, and guides are available to answer questions in Italian and Greek. We encourage all participants to ask questions — no question about safety is ever too basic.

Age Requirements and Physical Suitability

To ensure everyone on the water can participate safely and respond appropriately to guide instructions, we apply the following requirements:

  • Minimum age: 8 years old for standard routes (children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian)
  • Minimum weight: 30kg, to ensure the PFD functions correctly
  • Swimming ability: participants do not need to be strong swimmers, but basic water confidence is recommended
  • Medical conditions: guests with heart conditions, epilepsy, recent surgery, or pregnancy should consult their doctor before booking and inform us at the time of reservation

If you are unsure whether rafting is suitable for you or a member of your group, contact us when booking and we will discuss your options honestly. Guest safety always comes before any booking.

Medical Preparedness and Emergency Procedures

Our guides carry a fully stocked first aid kit on every trip, including supplies for wound care, hypothermia management, and cardiac emergency response. We maintain clear emergency action plans for all sections of our route, including pre-identified evacuation points with vehicle access and the fastest routes to the nearest medical facility.

All staff are briefed on emergency contact procedures and local emergency services. We maintain communication devices on all trips and monitor weather and river level forecasts daily. If conditions deteriorate beyond safe parameters, we reschedule — no exceptions.

Weather Monitoring and River Conditions

The Vjosa is a dynamic, free-flowing river — one of the very few left in Europe — which means its character can change with rainfall and seasonal variation. We monitor water levels, flow rates, and weather forecasts continuously during the operational season. All of this data informs daily decisions about whether, where, and how we run trips.

Guests are notified of any changes as early as possible. In the event of a cancellation due to unsafe conditions, we offer a full rescheduling or refund with no penalties. Safe vjosa rafting is non-negotiable, and we will never pressure guides or guests to proceed when conditions are not right.
