Rafting Day Trip from Tirana: Why You Should Stay a Night

Straight answer: not comfortably as a day trip. Përmet is about 230 km from Tirana, roughly three and a half to four hours each way. That is eight hours of driving for two hours on the water. Almost everyone who comes from Tirana stays at least one night in Përmet — and the trip is far better for it.

How far is Përmet from Tirana?

  • Distance: about 230 km
  • Kohëzgjatja e udhëtimit: 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours
  • Route: SH4 south through Fier and Tepelenë, then east along the Vjosa gorge into Përmet
  • Road condition: good main road as far as Tepelenë, then a narrower river road with bends

The final hour, from Tepelenë along the Vjosa, is the best part of the drive. The road follows the river the whole way and gives you a preview of the water you are about to paddle.

The sensible way to do it

Drive down the afternoon before, raft the 10:00 the next morning. You arrive in Përmet in the evening, eat well and cheaply, sleep, and are on the river fresh. Then you have the whole afternoon to drive back, or to carry on south to Gjirokastër and the coast.

If you genuinely only have one day, the 14:00 departure is the only workable option: leave Tirana by 09:30 at the latest, and expect to be back around 22:00.

By bus from Tirana

  • Daily buses run from Terminali i Jugut, Tirana’s Southern Bus Terminal, to Përmet
  • Journey time is 4 to 5 hours with stops
  • Departures are early morning, generally between 07:00 and 09:00
  • Fares are around 700–900 ALL, roughly €6–8
  • Faster furgon minibuses also run, but on a less predictable schedule

By bus a day trip is not possible — the timings do not work. Plan one night in Përmet. Tell us you are coming by bus when you book and we will collect you from the town centre.

Flying in?

Tirana International Airport is the nearest airport to the Vjosa. If you are landing and heading straight south, pick up a hire car at the airport, drive to Gjirokastër or Përmet the same day, and raft the following morning. A standard car handles the whole route — no four-wheel drive needed.

What the trip costs

€35 per adult, €30 per child, no deposit and nothing held on your card. Group rates are €32 each for 10 to 19 people and €28 each for 20 or more. The prices page has the full breakdown of what is included.

Making the drive worth it

Since you are covering 230 km, build a route rather than a round trip:

Can I do Vjosa rafting as a day trip from Tirana?

It is possible with the 14:00 departure but not enjoyable — around eight hours of driving for two hours of rafting. We strongly recommend one night in Përmet and the 10:00 departure the next morning.

How do I get from Tirana to Përmet without a car?

Daily buses leave Tirana’s Southern Bus Terminal early in the morning and take 4 to 5 hours, costing roughly €6–8. Minibuses also run. Either way you will need to stay overnight in Përmet.

Is there an airport closer than Tirana?

No. Tirana International is the nearest airport to Përmet, about 230 km away. Some visitors coming from Greece fly into Ioannina instead and cross at Kakavija, which is around three hours from Përmet.

Is the road from Tirana safe to drive?

Yes, in a normal car. The SH4 is a good main road as far as Tepelenë. The last hour along the Vjosa is narrower with bends — drive it in daylight if you can, and fill up with fuel in Tepelenë.
