Kayaking the Vjosa River in Albania: Complete Guide (2026)

Kayaker paddling the turquoise Vjosa river near Përmet, Albania

Rafting the Vjosa puts you in a boat with a guide and six other people. Kayaking puts you alone on the surface of Europe’s last wild river, reading the water yourself. It is a completely different relationship with the same stretch of river — quieter, more personal, and more addictive than most people expect.

Here is what kayaking the Vjosa in Albania actually involves, who it suits, and how it compares to going by raft.

Why Kayak the Vjosa?

The Vjosa runs 272 kilometres from the Pindus mountains in Greece to the Adriatic, and it is undammed along its length — the reason it was declared Vjosa Wild River National Park in March 2023, the first national park in Europe created specifically to protect a wild river.

What that means for a paddler is unusual. The river braids and shifts naturally across wide gravel beds. There are no reservoirs, no regulated releases, no concrete. The water level you get is the water level the mountains and the weather decided on. Very few rivers in Europe still behave this way.

Around Përmet you get clear turquoise water, gravel islands, mountain walls on both sides, and long readable rapids separated by calm pools. It is close to an ideal learning river.

Neither is better. Rafting is the right call for a mixed group who want a great day out. Kayaking is the right call if you want to learn a skill, travel alone, or you have already rafted the Vjosa and want to see it again differently.

Do You Need Experience?

Beginner kayakers on the Vjosa accompanied by a safety raft

For a guided beginner session, no. Sit-on-top and stable inflatable kayaks are very forgiving — if you come out, you simply float in your life jacket and get back on. A guided intro on the Vjosa typically runs like this:

  • Safety briefing and equipment fitting on the bank
  • Flat-water practice: forward stroke, turning, stopping
  • What to do if you capsize — practised, not just described
  • Reading the river: where the current runs, what to avoid, where to eddy out
  • The descent itself, with a guide on the water alongside you

A support raft accompanying a beginner group is standard practice on the Vjosa, and it makes the whole thing considerably more relaxed. Nobody is left to work it out alone.

If you are an experienced whitewater paddler with your own boat, the Vjosa and its tributaries offer plenty — but go with someone who knows the current state of the river. A wild river changes its channels between seasons, and last year’s line may not exist this year.

When to Kayak the Vjosa

Spring (March–May)

Snowmelt brings the highest, fastest water of the year. Exciting, cold, and better suited to paddlers with some experience. Wetsuits essential.

Summer (June–August)

The best window for beginners. Lower, warmer, clearer water, long days and reliable weather. Rapids are friendlier and swimming is a pleasure rather than a shock.

Autumn (September–October)

Arguably the nicest all-round conditions: warm air, comfortable water, thinner crowds and beautiful light in the valley. Rain later in the season can lift levels quickly.

Our month-by-month guide to visiting Albania covers water levels and weather in more detail.

What to Bring

  • Swimwear worn under quick-drying clothes
  • Secure footwear that can get wet — river shoes or old trainers, not flip-flops
  • Sun protection — water-resistant sunscreen, sunglasses with a retainer strap, a cap
  • A dry change of clothes and a towel for afterwards
  • Water and a snack
  • A camera only if it is properly waterproof and attached — the river keeps anything it takes

Kayak, paddle, helmet, buoyancy aid and wetsuit where needed are all provided. Full detail in our beginner’s guide.

Safety on a Wild River

The Vjosa is friendly by whitewater standards, but it is a real river, not a controlled course. Sensible practice:

  • Always paddle with a guide or in a group — never solo on an unfamiliar wild river.
  • Helmet and buoyancy aid on, properly fastened, the entire time on the water.
  • If you capsize: hold on to your paddle, get on your back, feet downstream and up near the surface. Do not try to stand in moving water.
  • Tell your guide honestly how well you swim. It changes how they position themselves.
  • Skip the alcohol beforehand. The raki can wait until the evening.

Combining Kayaking with the Rest of Përmet

A kayak session runs a half day, which leaves the afternoon free. The natural pairing is the Bënjë thermal baths — hot springs beside an Ottoman bridge, about fifteen minutes from town, and exactly what tired shoulders want. Lengarica Canyon is right there too.

Then dinner in Përmet, which has the best food reputation of any small town in Albania.

Paddling a River That Still Runs Free

Most of Europe’s rivers have been straightened, dammed or channelled. The Vjosa was very nearly among them — dozens of hydropower schemes were proposed along it before the campaign that led to national park status in 2023.

Sitting in a kayak on a braided gravel bed, watching the river choose its own channels, is the clearest possible argument for why that mattered. See our piece on eco-tourism on the Vjosa for the wider story.
